In 1948, Brooks School was one of eight founding members of the Gummere Cup League. The Gummere Cup is one of the oldest high school soccer trophies in the nation. The Independent School League now includes sixteen schools and the Cup is awarded each fall to its round-robin champion. The ISL is generally regarded as one of the most competitive high school leagues in the country, and matches are played every Wednesday and Saturday for eight weeks.
The program has enjoyed remarkable success in the 21st century, winning six ISL championships and appearing in the New England Tournament all but three seasons since 2000. Along with the team accomplishments, Brooks has produced high school and college All-American players, a few successful professionals, and a U.S. National team star (Charlie Davies ’04). Many Brooks players continue their careers at the collegiate level playing in the best leagues in the country.
Far more important than the superb results the 1st team has achieved recently is the longstanding team culture and traditions that are nurtured and upheld. Each year the experience is best measured by the bonds that are formed and the closeness of the team. This process of “team building” is a primary focus from the start of pre-season training through the final days in November. Raising the level of “team-ness” is every bit as important as raising the level of play. Though we have had a number of individuals who have gone on to great soccer heights, the team culture has always required that they aspire to be outstanding teammates.
We have magnificent training and match facilities at Brooks. Each of the three teams in the program has their own pitch. Additionally, there are three back-to-back penalty areas as well as 40 X 60 yards of grids. All of the training equipment necessary for a rigorous daily program is available. The 1st team plays on a superb 120 X 75-yard field with a tower for video, electronic scoreboard and covered team benches.
We believe that our training program is unparalleled in terms of player, team and personal development. Four days a week (in addition to the two match days) 90- to 120-minute training sessions are spirited, competitive and fun. Tactical, technical and fitness components are included daily. We prepare specific tactical plans for each upcoming opponent and evaluate each match thoroughly, with individual and team ratings. We aspire to produce fundamentally sound players and teams. We believe in strong collective defending and creative play in the front third. Most importantly, we design training so that players learn to solve problems on the pitch, individually and collectively.
The manifold success of our players at the college level and beyond is the best advertisement for our program. We firmly believe that Brooks represents one of the best combinations of a superior academic program and an elite soccer experience for our students.
