Spring Break Sports Trips

Spring snow? Not a problem for many of Brooks School’s athletic teams. As soon as Spring Break rolled around, five of them skipped town.

Training trips down south in the warmer weather provide the athletes “some time to get ready and have some fun,” said Assistant Director of Athletics John Cunningham about the getaways during each March vacation.

A coach of the boys 1st lacrosse team, he and head coach Ian Speliotis ’14 just accompanied a group of their players to the "sunshine state" for five days of practices and games at the Boombah Sports Complex in Sanford, Florida.

Two hours away in Clearwater, Florida, Brooks’ girls lacrosse team was doing the same thing.

Brooks’ baseball and softball squads, meanwhile, both went to Orlando, Florida for five days this month and indulged in riding rollercoasters, swimming and exploring the theme parks of the Universal Orlando Resort, when not training or competing in a series of games.

“Spring training trips are a really easy way for the kids to get to know each other and build some camaraderie,” said Cunningham. “There were seven inches of snow on the ground before we left, so these trips let us run around outside, get some sunshine and have a good time. We go to the beach or play paintball or do some other fun things, as well.”

Crew continued their annual tradition of trekking down to South Carolina — for the ninth time. The athletes bunked, worked out and bonded at the Clemson University Outdoor Lab in Pendleton, where they enjoyed the opportunity to row each day on the 56,000-acre Lake Hartwell.

As much as these excursions are literal fun and games, they serve a serious purpose, too. “It’s all about building some good vibes before we dive into a season that starts right away,” said Cunningham. “We play a game in about five days after we get back!”
