Girls 1st Soccer Opens Barrios Era with Two Wins
The Brooks girls soccer team entered their season with a new head coach and several new roles to fill, following the graduation of a strong 2026 class. Encouragingly, they've started strong, winning their first two games: 2-1 over Deerfield Academy on Wednesday and a 3-0 shutout of Dana Hall School on Friday.
“I think the girls learned a lot about themselves and had some meaningful realizations about what they’re capable of achieving,” said Head Coach Brendon Barrios (below on right).

Against Deerfield, Brooks overcame a slow start before finding its rhythm late in the first half. Delaney Bertos '27 converted a penalty kick to give Brooks the lead, and after Deerfield equalized early in the second half, she came through again from the penalty spot with 10 minutes remaining. The defense held firm in the closing minutes to preserve the 2-1 victory and give Barrios his first win at Brooks.
Two days later, Brooks put together a more complete performance against Dana Hall. The team established possession early and found the back of the net three times in the opening half.
Grace Marquis '27 opened the scoring after combining with Bertos, who then doubled the lead with a strike from outside the box. Marquis added her second goal late in the half after Nina Schwartz '28 (below) found her with a throw-in.

The defense kept Dana Hall off the scoreboard throughout the second, and goalkeeper Jazz Milona '29 helped preserve the clean sheet when she made a highlight-reel penalty kick save late in the game.
The early success comes after a preseason in which the team faced questions about how it would respond to the departure of a talented class of 2026. “There was a lot of discussion going into this season, both inside and outside of the team, about replacing such a strong senior class,” Barrios said. “And they were good, don't get me wrong — but our results have been outstanding.”
For Barrios, the opening week has provided an early glimpse of how today's team can work together. “I am so proud of the girls who have stepped in to fill roles, as well as the known leaders of this team who have continued their excellence from last year,” he said. “I couldn't have asked for a better start as coach of this program.”
Brooks will look to build on its strong opening week on Wednesday, when the team travels to Phillips Exeter Academy for a 3 p.m. matchup.
