Fun with Robots!

Brooks School's afternoon activities got a jolt of energy last month when a new robotics program rolled out, offering students the chance to learn all about and activate robots!

Learn more about Brooks School's afternoon activities program

Robotics, considered a team activity, was open to students of all ages and began last month, alongside the traditional afternoon activities from athletics to arts and community service.

Afternoon activities at Brooks are an extension of the classroom and provide students with the opportunity to deeply explore the activities and interscholastic sports that interest them, as well as step outside their comfort zone and try something new.

Five days a week robotics students meet to learn about, build and program robots to solve fun challenge problems — no prior coding experience required. Challenges the students' 'bots will face include navigating mazes, playing robot soccer and operating autonomously.

"I think robotics has become popular because it gives students a chance to get their hands dirty and build and program 'bots to do fun things," said program leader, science teacher Dr. Danielle Ward. "It's a great afternoon activity, as the regular meetings allow for students to explore robotics without any academic pressure."

The curriculum is "very fluid and will be student-led, covering things that students are interested in," she added, "as we not only learn about the robots that we have here at Brooks, but also about how those concepts show up in 'real' robots in industry."
