Career Milestone for Jake Inzirillo ’22

Jake Inzirillo ’22, a junior goaltender on the Johnson and Wales University men’s ice hockey team, recently reached a career milestone: his 1,500th career save for the Wildcats!

Entering the game against Roger Williams University on February 13, Inzirillo only needed 14 saves to reach the mark. He played stellar between the pipes and posted 30 saves to help the Wildcats beat their in-state rivals 2-1.

“I knew I was close to 1,500 saves but I had no idea I was that close,” he said. “It’s pretty neat and I’m proud of the accomplishment.”

Just a day later, Inzirillo had another great game in net, making 30 more saves against Roger Williams in a 3-3 tie that helped them clinch a playoff spot in the Conference of New England (CNE) tournament.

As the sixth seed, they traveled to third-seeded Suffolk University on February 25 for the quarterfinals. The team came up short, suffering an 8-1 loss, but there was still good news in store for Inzirillo.

On March 4, he was named to the CNE Men's Ice Hockey Second Team.

“The saves on the weekend were more of a bonus for me than anything else after the sweep,” Inzirillo said. “What mattered most was getting in the win column, clinching a playoff spot and checking all of those boxes that weekend. That was the only thing on my mind, in all honesty.”

The Brooks grad entered this season ranked second in program history in save pct. (.915), fourth in goals against average (GAA) (3.37), seventh in minutes (1604:06), and eighth in wins (nine) and saves (974).

He was also named the CNE Men's Hockey Goaltender of the Week after a 49-save performance against Suffolk University on January 20. The nomination was the fourth of his career.

“It’s nice to be acknowledged and I’m proud of my performances but every time I get one of those nominations it is my team that deserves just as much recognition,” he said. “They always play great in front of me and it really lets me get into a spot mentally where I can perform at the highest level.”

Inzirillo is also a member of the men’s lacrosse team at Johnson and Wales, where he has played in 29 games in his freshman and sophomore years, starting six of them.

In his sixth-form year at Brooks, Inzirillo was also one of New England’s top goalies, posting a 1.42GAA and a .955 save percentage while playing nearly every minute for Brooks that winter, leading the team to an 11-9-4 record, and being named to the Neutral Zone Goaltender of the Year.
