Visual Arts
The visual arts program at Brooks is designed to provide students with the opportunity to expand their art consciousness — and to allow gifted students a chance for serious study in the medium of their choice.
Everyone is an artist at Brooks, experimenting through a variety of courses in studio art from drawing, painting and printmaking to sculpture, photography and film.

Drawing
Students delve into expressive line quality, create value, perspective and narrative as they build a portfolio.
Painting
Exploring watercolor, gouache and acrylic, student workshops focus on approaches and technique in each medium.
Ceramics
Handbuilding and wheel skills methods help students learn clay construction and a spectrum of finishes.
Photography
With courses in film and digital photography, artists experiment with light, contrast, composition and develop their vision.
Inspiration all Around
Outside of the classroom there are ample extracurricular opportunities enabling students to continue the creative process, including open-art-studio evenings, arts-related clubs and more. Our faculty lead by example. Many are passionate working artists in their own right, offering an authentic and current understanding of the struggle and joy of creating work.
Digital & Media arts
In the digital media lab of Center for the Arts, digital art students work with cutting-edge tools and learn techniques and conceptual skills to create a portfolio of composite paintings, digital illustration, album covers and more.
Moving on to the Advanced Open Studio Media Arts course, artists can further develop their unique visual language and build a portfolio in photography, cinematography, animation or digital art. The students in this class will even curate and produce a their own student art exhibition.
Tangible Results
In each of the visual arts classes, students of all levels create original bodies of work, participate in formal and informal critique sessions, and ready pieces for display both on campus in the Robert Lehman Art Center gallery and in the Greater Boston area.
