Music

A string quartet and a harpist perform on a stage with a blue backdrop and a large harp.

Music is around us every day. It is so ubiquitous that we often do not realize how it envelops us, fills us and connects us to thoughts and feelings we would not otherwise experience.

At Brooks, the diverse selection of music courses, ensembles and activities offers students the chance to make music a richer and deeper part of their lives.

Being involved in music at Brooks will give you so much more than just the ability to play an instrument. It gives you the opportunity to express yourself, find new passions, develop your skills and be part of a supportive musical community ."

A Medley of Options

Through their activities, students can begin to understand music in its greater historical and social contexts and discover connections between music and other academic disciplines.

Variety of Opportunities

The school encourages students to nurture their musical interests and abilities through:

  • group and solo performance
  • private lessons
  • classes in music history and music theory.

Student-Driven Groups

As students get inspired, groups are added. Current ensemble classes include:

  • two rock bands
  • two jazz bands
  • two choruses
  • a chamber orchestra

"After Hours" Fun

Students can also form their own ensembles, or sing after hours in our a cappella group or gospel choir.

Open mic nights and the "Arts Cabaret" are other ways artists can jump in and perform as they like!

From the annual winter and spring Concerts and our Woodstock-esque "Brookstock" outdoor music festival, to smaller and more intimate events such as the Arts Cabaret and seasonal open-mic nights, students have a wide array of performance opportunities.

As a recent alum once said, "There’s a place for you in the Brooks music program. Your only job is to be fluid and try everything. And when you find that instrument or genre that gives you chills when you hear it? You’ll know you’ve found home."
