Learning with Leigh Perkins '81

Understanding the World through Literature: Experience Leigh Perkins' Fourth-Form World Literature Class

In this one-hour session you will learn about the evolution of the fourth-form English curriculum and how it fits into the department’s progression. You will meet several students and hear their perspective on the course. You will get some pre-reading for a sample lesson, and if you don’t do your homework, you will get the full Perkins classroom experience, even through the Zoom screen . . . 

Daughter of Leonard S. “Skip” Perkins ’56 and Maureen G. Perkins H’81, both Brooks faculty members emeritus, Perkins and her brother Tod ’83 grew up on the Brooks campus.

After graduating in 1981 as part of the first co-ed class, she went on to earn a B.A. from Williams College and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School. Following a stint as a litigator and another as a trade journalist, she found her way back to Brooks in 1998.

In her time at Brooks, she has traveled the world with students (including trips to India, China, Belize and Afghanistan), hoping to pass along her love of exploring other ways of life and believing that personal connections trump fear and mistrust in the world.

The other Brooks hat she wears is that of parent — daughter Samantha graduated in 2014 and son Jake graduated in 2018. Perkins holds the Prince Charitable Trust Endowed Chair, works in the Brooks Community Service program, serves on the Diversity Leadership Council, and lives on campus in a dorm.
