Sixth-Form

Sixth-form year is a time when so much is going on in students’ lives. Their Brooks careers are culminating with expanded leadership responsibilities and often their most rigorous academic courses. They’re making their mark on the school and deciding what their legacies will be as individuals and as a class. While all this is happening, they are deeply engaged in the labor-intensive process of choosing the next step in their educational journey.

The sixth-form program is one of process management, command of details, and both individual and group support as the class assesses their options, applies to colleges and universities, decides where they will attend, and then prepares to make a significant transition in their lives as they leave Brooks.

The sixth-form fall is highlighted by regular individual meetings with counselors, a four-hour writing and application workshop in mid-October, frequent group sessions to stay on top of the flow of the process, sessions with over 100 admissions officers who visit Brooks from mid-September through early November, and careful attention to every aspect of the process as students complete their lists and their applications.

Students receive counsel on topics as specific as their individual essays and standardized testing plans, and as broad as the financial aid process. Once students have applied, they are counseled through:

  • taking in the news as results roll in
  • managing the flow of documents while they wait for outcomes
  • staying on top of their work
  • making choices between schools
  • maximizing waitlist outcomes
  • transitioning to college

At a school with a mission focused on providing a meaningful experience, a deeply personalized and growth-oriented college process is an essential capstone.
